What makes a good schoolteacher?

Having a good teacher early on in life can be incredibly rewarding for young children and motivate them to tackle difficult tasks. But what makes a good schoolteacher? Particularly young children in primary and nursery school can benefit from compassionate and competent teachers. Here are some of the qualities that great teachers have:

Patience is key.

When you work with small children it is important to be patient. Even though you will likely encounter many tantrums, crying fits, anger and more, being able to patiently handle the situation and then put it aside is particularly important.

Show them that you care.

Especially at a young age, kids may see their teachers as an important part of their lives. This is why it is so important to show plenty of empathy when it comes to working with children.

Try to find encouraging, kind words to build confidence. Smile often – small gestures will go a long way, but they will also help make your day easier. The response might surprise you. Many children thank their teachers with a card at the end of the school year and are likely to give them to those that helped make their year easier.

Communication

Talking to the kids and making sure that they feel heard is important but keeping in touch with their parents is also unbelievably valuable. This will make teaching much easier. Don’t hesitate to talk to parents about any concerns or issues that they might have.

Organisation

Especially since it can be hard to get kids to quiet down during lessons, being prepared and organised will help you structure the day. Lessons need to be well-thought-out and organised to minimize distractions and help the children understand the material.

Here are some of the most important qualities that a great teacher could have:

  1. Empathy
  2. Communication
  3. Positivity
  4. Listening Skills
  5. Engagement
  6. Focus
  7. Patience
  8. Adaptability
  9. Practicality
  10. Organisation skills.

Teachers impact their students lives in a very meaningful way. The way that a teacher communicates with children in a classroom can build their self-esteem as well as sharpen their academic skills. Teaching kids how to approach life in a confident way will help increase their chances of success later on. If you thrive to become an outstanding schoolteacher, you may have a very important impact on your student’s lives.
