How to save money on a weekend away

As the UK embarks on the roadmap to recovery, travel restrictions have been loosened and UK citizens have been given the go-ahead to travel freely between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

With international travel still being somewhat complicated, many Brits are opting for the humble staycation. With staycation bookings increasing by up to 300% in the last year, it seems that of us have concluded that spending time with loved ones is more important than spending money on them.

To help you save money on your weekend away and make that money stretch a bit further, we’ve put together our 5 top tips to a frugal staycation.

  1. Travel at different times

Be flexible with travel times. Although you may have set dates, one way to save money is by travelling off-peak. So if you’re planning a weekend away at the famous York races, book your trains to York at a quieter time to save some pennies.

  • Score deals on days out

If you fancy a jam-packed itinerary, that doesn’t mean you need to spend over the odds on tickets to various attractions. Discount sites such as Groupon regularly have deals on popular attractions, so check there first to save some money on excursions.

  • Dine outside of the tourist traps

If you’re on vacation, one of the top tips to save money is to avoid the tourist traps. Often placed outside the main squares of cities – these restaurants can be pricey!

Where possible, try to wander some of the quieter back streets when you’re looking for a place to eat. Not only do these places tend to be cheaper, but they usually serve more authentic food – it’s a win-win situation!

  • Eat in

Contrary to the above point, if your accommodation has a kitchenette – why not eat in one evening? Many apartments available to let on Airbnb include cooking facilities, so make the most of them!

By saving some money eating in a couple of nights, you can spend more money on days out, or save yourselef for one more expensive meal.

  • Leave it until last minute

Although it is usually advisable to book as soon as possible, it can pay off to be last minute. Many hotels often have great last minute deals and will need to fill empty rooms, so you may be able to snag a bargain.

If you’re really keen, you could even ring the hotels directly to check for any last-minute cancellations.

The bottom line

You don’t have to spend a fortune to have a brilliant staycation. If you are flexible with travel, cook your own meals a few nights and get savvy with reservations and excursions – you can have a luxury holiday that costs a lot less than you’d think.
